As It Turns Out, Spending Long Hours At The Office Could Be Killing You

According to the U.S. Census, most Americans have office jobs that require them to spend long hours sitting at their desks. But did you know that your desk job could be putting your health at risk?

Plenty of blue-collar workers dream of being able to sit down and relax in a cubicle all day, but studies show that they might be better off from a health standpoint.

In a longterm study for the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, nearly 43 percent of the 1,900 cubicle-bound participants involved had heart problems.

They suffered from cardiovascular conditions like angina, coronary artery disease, heart failure, heart attack, and high blood pressure.

People who were stuck working extra hours were most at risk for heart issues. The risk rose by 1 percent for each additional hour worked per week after 10 years or more. People who worked up to 55 hours per week were 16 percent more likely to develop heart disease.

If you work at a desk, there are a few things you can do to avoid those complications. First and foremost, you should stand up as much as possible. Investing in a standing desk, for example, could help you out in the long run.

Setting a timer to get up and move around every hour or so will do wonders for your body and mind.

While the findings from this study are alarming, avoiding the same fate is easy as long as you make getting up and walking around part of your routine at work.

You Won’t Believe How Your Workspace Has Changed Over The Years… Wow.

Our workspaces have changed dramatically over the years. In 1984, your average office desk had a basic computer, a Rolodex, a fax machine, and a schedule. Technology eventually made these things obsolete, and replaced them with efficient software.

The fine folks at the Harvard Innovation Lab visualized the technological transformation of the modern American office in the new video below. You can also see images juxtaposing desks from different eras. Isn’t technology amazing?

The office worker’s desk as it looked in 1984. So cluttered.

Here is the average desk in 2005. Much less cluttered than 1984, but still not quite there yet.

Ahh… modern 2014 desks. No clutter, just a laptop and a smart phone. The only thing missing a giant cup of organic, fair trade coffee.

A side-by-side comparison.

As a member of the Millennial officer worker generation, I can’t imagine working like people did in 1984. How did anyone get anything done with that clutter?
