No, Twitter did not suspend the official IDF Twitter account

Some Twitter users are celebrating the supposed suspension of the Israel Defense Forces’ Twitter account this morning.

.@idfspokesman (*cough* spokesperson *cough*) being suspended is great news. can we suspend the attacks as well?

— Thomas Walpole (@drcabl3) November 15, 2012

Who thought that was a good idea in the first place? “@asher_wolf: . @idfspokesman has been suspended.”

— Nathaniel Beal (@battywriter26) November 15, 2012

And “real journalists” are helping the rumor along.

It looks like Twitter suspended @idfspokesman.

RT @ethanklapper: It looks like Twitter suspended @idfspokesman.

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) November 15, 2012

One problem there, guys: The IDF’s official account is @IDFSpokesperson, not @IDFSpokesman. The IDF was not sent to Twitter Gulag.

HuffPo’s Ethan Klapper quickly corrected his error, as did BuzzFeed’s Zeke Miller.

Sorry guys. He’s right. My bad! RT @brennan: @davidbegnaud @ethanklapper The account is @idfspokesperson.

— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) November 15, 2012

RT @ethanklapper: Again, my mistake, thae account is still active. It’s @idfspokesperson, not @idfspokesman.

— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) November 15, 2012

And the IDF continues to tweet:

Our latest count: 245 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel since yesterday. #IsraelUnderFire

— IDF (@IDFSpokesperson) November 15, 2012

But unfortunately, the false rumor persists, especially among those who would love to see the IDF silenced:

Good RT @ayandamo RT @zekejmiller: RT @ethanklapper: It looks like Twitter suspended @idfspokesman

— ZΣΣ † (@Zee_SA) November 15, 2012

so they are still issuing threats? ugh RT @jackalanon: Their account is @idfspokesperson RT @asher_wolf: . @idfspokesman has been suspended.

— Liza Sabater (@blogdiva) November 15, 2012

Wow. Here endeth the Twitter wars. RT @zekejmiller: RT @ethanklapper: It looks like Twitter suspended @idfspokesman.

No room for obscene gloating at death RT @besasley: Wow. RT @zekejmiller: RT @ethanklapper: It looks like Twitter suspended @idfspokesman.

— RepStones (@RepStones) November 15, 2012
